BUILD A FIRE

posted January 9th, 2023

Meg Baird’sforthcoming album unfurls with a perennial bloom, grappling with stark existential unknowns and the mysteries that hide in nature and humanity at their most ordinary. Furling (out 1/27) resonates with its gradually unfolding themes and variations of sounds, building out a world all its own.

Driving a near-funereal piano dirge with her steady, elemental drums, Meg visits a stylistic and emotional extreme: simultaneously elegiac and uplifting wordless vocals with fragments of vibraphone, impressionistic guitar phrases, and analog synth that... (read more)

IT'S THE LONER

posted January 6th, 2023

The Future is (almost) here! A recently unearthed collection of cult sensation J.T. IV’s music turned up nineteen (!) unheard tracks, providing the majority of his forthcoming double album, The Future.

J.T. IV’s outsider rock was equal parts light and darkness, a lightning bolt schizo-splitting a raw power punk rocker and an earnest, hope-filled acoustic rocker from the same troubled body. Unable to function in the straight world, John got fucked up and jammed his tunes with friends, taping the music and... (read more)

Last minute gift time? What other time is there? So here’s a quick list of suggestions n blah blah blah!

PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE

That’s a good theme for the year, right – any year, every year? But one that feels more than ever like the KEY. And it was those lads from No Age that brought it to our attention by titling their new one exactly that. “People helping people” isn’t as simple a concept as we all expect it... (read more)

MESSAGES FROM THE STARS

posted November 15th, 2022

Meg Baird’s forthcoming long player, Furling, lives in the notion that whole universes of experience, enlightenment, elation, and ecstasy can bloom in every corner. And while it’s true that some songs on Furling grapple with humanity’s existential unknowns in stark terms, they primarily revel in the mysteries that hide in nature and humanity at their most ordinary.

The second single from Furling, “Star Hill Song,” out today, is a swooning mediation on romantic solidarity in emotionally trying times, by Meg and collaborator/partner/co-writer of... (read more)

PERSONALITY CRISIS

posted November 7th, 2022

Inspired by the underground, proto-punk sounds wafting in the late 1970s air and desperate to be heard, John Timmis created a character for himself: J.T. I.V. Born only to rock, this musical conception was a rabid personality crisis consisting of proselyte elitism and nihilistic excess. To a 70s wild-child like J.T., Brian Eno’s music cut through the noise like a switch-blade. So for this second taste of The Future, it's apt to share J.T.'s take on Eno's “The Fat Lady of... LET BILL ENTERTAIN EU

posted October 24th, 2022

From the beautiful to the jarring, intrepid explorer Bill Callahan charts a passage through all kinds of territory on his new album YTI⅃AƎЯ. Cascading images flow forth from his stream of consciousness, as if scanning the words gathered in a dream journal. Bill’s lyrics strain at the lines on the page, not content to be confined as simply ink on paper, or to separate the printing of the fact from the legend.

With this nu YTI⅃AƎЯ on display, Bill's got a string of... (read more)

RELEASE THE GLYDERS! THE HUNT IS ON

posted October 24th, 2022

80 degrees in the midnight shade. Just another breezeless night. The crickets and the sirens and the humming of florescents and neon all melting down in the groove. An emptiness it’d be a shame to lose. Except – is that the wind kicking up? Whether you knew it or not, here it comes now – you’re right in the path of Maria’s Hunt.

BRAVE NEW WORLD

posted October 18th, 2022

On Through A Room, the false dichotomy of composition and improvisation is thoroughly and rightfully abolished. Where Both was a chiseling down of spontaneous live performance, Through a Room treats its sounds as building blocks, combining them to mesmerizing effect. This exploration of terrain is an engrossing depiction of complex emotions and relentless catharsis.

Emerging from a sparse open field, “The Giant” is a synthesis of deep-listening techniques, moving from tone-generation to gamelan to avant howl and back again, with... (read more)
