Aye, more music from Anthony Moore, dead ahead! Home of the Demo digs up ten unheard songs from the Slapp Happy founder's tuneage treasury, containing some seriously smart stuff he made between 1978–1984 that finally gets to breathe on this upcoming archival release. The second single "Me and Neil Diamond" is out today, sailing into the night with some circa-'84 vocals from Echo & the Bunnymen's Ian McCulloch.
Gauzy, aquatic, dusk-flavored keyboards set the scene for this truly off-the-wall song concept: a surreal, night sea-voyage(-of-the-soul), with the titular songwriting legend aboard as spirit companion. Subtle rhythm programming and layers of backing vocals by Anthony and Maz Palladino elevate the chorus of "Me and Neil Diamond" to adult contemporary ecstasy as the breathy sensuality of Ian McCulloch’s lead vocal cinches this demo’s far-fetched perfection. All are welcome aboard... just don't stop having a good time!
Home of the Demo is the third archival release from Anthony's trove of tapes, following the previously unreleased OUT (1976, officially issued 2020) and the new wave-adjacent Flying Doesn’t Help (1979, reissued 2022). Below the decks aboard this new collection: the immediately recognizable "Earthbound Misfit" (later rendered a hit by Pink Floyd as “Learning to Fly”), a rousing faux-live rendition of "Lucia Still Alive", a torn up version of "Judy, Judy" with the mysterious Page the Oracle obliterating an electric guitar... it's loaded! And, it's a lock on Home of the Demo, out October 25, 2024.
