Over the past two decades, Tashi Dorji’s distinguished approach to the guitar has unveiled sounds both materially unheard and eternally familiar. Striking upon the fuse of his 2020 record Stateless, Tashi’s follow-up is an acoustic statement: all improvised, always political, sounding sympathy for the opposition in the fabric of every experimental revelation. we will be wherever the fires are lit is out November 22; today, Tashi releases the album’s title track.
Strumming a march — countered by a deliriously fingered counter-riff — Tashi paints the complexities inherent in any rebellion with “we will be wherever the fires are lit”. A bass lick within the line is picked at and hung upon; from here forward, Tashi’s explosive variations are held with intense reserve, outlining the imperative of stalwart constancy amid chaos. Held strong with a flickering black-and-white music video by Tashi, the song emerges as an unlikely but undeniable acoustic anthem.
Tashi’s sound is his own, but we can’t help but feel the sound of many nations, in all hemispheres, storming through these acoustic expressions. Who else would it be for, if not for everyone? We all hear it, and you will too. we will be wherever the fires are lit is out November 22, 2024.
