THIS IS NOT A LOVE SONG! OR IS IT?

posted May 21st, 2019

Hang on - Exurbian Quonset is almost here! Mike Donovan's third solo LP and second in the past year hits down on Friday, and finds him in full flight, bringing out the deep grain out of his chose folk/sike/rock,with a variety of degraded pop tunes immaculately arranged, like flowers for your pleasure. His gracious bow began back in February, with the announce, and the hearty roll-and-screech of "Digital Dan" to bolster against the cold. This was by second drop, "Wadworth March" which was equally... (read more)

RETURN TO HOFFMAN ESTATES THIS WEEK!

posted May 20th, 2019

Blank Forms presents the show of the year that you didn't even know you were looking forward to not missing! On Thursday, May 23, at the Brooklyn School of Music, Kevin Drumm headlines a show featuring the reconvened ensemble of Alan Licht, Loren Connors, Ken Vandemark, Joshua Abrams and Chad Taylor - an all-star reunion of 1998's all-star production of Licht and Mazzacane-Connor's Hoffman Estates album. On it's (just past) 20th anniversary, the subtle charms of Jim O'Rourke's production seem... (read more)

BROKE MOON KEEP ON RISING

posted May 20th, 2019

2019's A Broke Moon Rises was a necessarily cathartic experience in all phases; Papa M blew it out, all the different styles he's played in over the years, from folk-blues to metal, electronic, pop, Bollywood...all of it. Afterwards, with no tour dates around the album release (partially due to lousy clubs and their lack of wheelchair-accessible stage doors!), the day to see Pajo live seems like it would never come. Then like a flash of light, Papa M hopped on some select dates with Sunn... (read more)

PURPLE MOUNTAINS MAJESTIES

posted May 17th, 2019

Ten years have come and gone since Silver Jews, whose classic run was made somehow finite in 2009, when the voice himself, David Berman, announced his retirement from music. Where the time goes, we do not know. What do they say about old songwriters? We don't know that one either, okay? We're not good with jokes - we're just glad that there's always more songs to be written and sung. That's what raised up Purple Mountains for all of us, after all.   ... (read more)

REACHING FOR GAIA INFINITUS

posted May 9th, 2019

"Let it be known that I (Haley Fohr) once walked the Earth and chose to sing my way through life. Let it be known that one of these many singing rituals transpired on Nov 11, 2018 at Le Guess Who? Festival. On this evening Cooper Crain rearranged works from 2017's "Reaching For Indigo", members of the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra helped re-imagine this aforementioned music, Le Guess Who? Festival documented it, and here today we have Reaching For Indigo: GAIA INFINITUS: Performed... (read more)

THE LOST CITY OF NASHLANTIS

posted May 7th, 2019

The annals of Nashville, the 20th century's immortal Music City, are filled with lore of the legends, as well as tales of the one-shots, the lesser-knowns and the delightful obscurities. Like the outlaw he defines himself as, Chris Gantry doesn't really fit in any of those boxes -and now, 50-plus years since he wrote his first hit, "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife", Gantry prepares to release Nashlantis, his first album of new music following the 2017 archival release of At The House of Cash... LET BILL CALLAHAN GUIDE YOU

posted May 2nd, 2019

Rejoice! Bill Callahan's late-phase hot streak continues with his first record since 2013, Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest

After Dream River, Bill's life went through some changes. Good changes - marriage and a kid - but afterwards, it was suddenly harder for him to find the place where the songs came, to make him and these new experiences over again into something to sing. His songs have always been elusive, landing lightly between character study and autobiography, as the singer-songwriter often... (read more)

Fresh of their recent trip down under, No Age continue their intercontinental burst with a two-date blast to Japan next month! Like we've spouted since it came out, the Snares Like A Haircut campaign cannot be contained, it's a flame that burns long and slow, just like the smoldering heat that comes outta these two dudes!
