BILL CALLAHAN SLIPS IT IN SIDE TWO

posted May 30th, 2019

As on Side 1, the mics open up into the moment preceding the music, letting our ears wander into the room seconds before the song starts. The light that was dappling on "Morning Is My Godmother" is seen from higher up at the top of the flip, as Bill gives us an airplane song in the grand tradition of Lightfoot and Denver, Chuck Berry and Steve Miller. "747" slips easily into cruising altitude, a staunch full band collaboration, while Bill wanders absently... (read more)

FAUN THE ROAD AGAIN

posted May 24th, 2019

Dawn McCarthy and Nils Frykdahl, a.k.a Faun Fables - are hitting the road again. It's family-style of course, with Edda, Ura and Gudrin along for the ride, taking in the world with the childlike wonder that is their way (because they are children) - and a nanny/driver/merch person rounding out the crew, no doubt! Faun Fables do everything in the name of home and family, including leave home for the Pacific Northwest, as they have already done even as we speak! It all begins... (read more)

THIS IS NOT A LOVE SONG! OR IS IT?

posted May 21st, 2019

Hang on - Exurbian Quonset is almost here! Mike Donovan's third solo LP and second in the past year hits down on Friday, and finds him in full flight, bringing out the deep grain out of his chose folk/sike/rock,with a variety of degraded pop tunes immaculately arranged, like flowers for your pleasure. His gracious bow began back in February, with the announce, and the hearty roll-and-screech of "Digital Dan" to bolster against the cold. This was by second drop, "Wadworth March" which was equally... (read more)

BROKE MOON KEEP ON RISING

posted May 20th, 2019

2019's A Broke Moon Rises was a necessarily cathartic experience in all phases; Papa M blew it out, all the different styles he's played in over the years, from folk-blues to metal, electronic, pop, Bollywood...all of it. Afterwards, with no tour dates around the album release (partially due to lousy clubs and their lack of wheelchair-accessible stage doors!), the day to see Pajo live seems like it would never come. Then like a flash of light, Papa M hopped on some select dates with Sunn... (read more)

PURPLE MOUNTAINS MAJESTIES

posted May 17th, 2019

Ten years have come and gone since Silver Jews, whose classic run was made somehow finite in 2009, when the voice himself, David Berman, announced his retirement from music. Where the time goes, we do not know. What do they say about old songwriters? We don't know that one either, okay? We're not good with jokes - we're just glad that there's always more songs to be written and sung. That's what raised up Purple Mountains for all of us, after all.   ... (read more)
