Drag City's Alasdair Roberts and Scottish Gaelic singer Màiri Morrison have joined with Pete Johnston and his Canadian all-star band for their new collaborative LP.  Remembered in Exile: Songs and Ballads from Nova Scotia is a collection of newly crafted arrangements of traditional Scottish songs pulled from the pioneering work of folklorist Helen Creighton (1899-1989).

DOWN THE STAIRCASE LEADS SHARPIE SMILE

posted April 22nd, 2025

Sharpie Smile’s debut album has one question for you: is your heart good enough to take The Staircase?

Sharpie Smile is Dylan Hadley and Cole Berliner. They met in 2015, a pair of musically-adept nonconformist teenagers that started writing music together for a project called Kamikaze Palm Tree. With Dylan on drums and Cole on guitar, they produced two albums of thorny, ear-wormy art rock, touring the country and fitting in session work for Cate Le BonA. Savage,... (read more)

MATTHEW YOUNG'S SUMMER SONG

posted April 16th, 2025

We're drifting back to Matthew Young's world with a brand-new album: Undercurrents! Collecting eight oddly dissimilar pieces that somehow fit together perfectly, Young's latest work was recorded intermittently since the late 1970s, songs both old and new. Settle in with the second single out today, "The Summer Girls".

Undercurrents displays a wide range of Young’s various sonic pallets: similar to Recurring Dreams (1981, reissued 2014) the electronic landscapes meander coherently, and much like Traveler's Advisory (1986, reissued 2010), the album... (read more)

MESS ESQUE LEAVE THE NEST

posted April 8th, 2025

Jay Marie, Comfort Me is a bold third missive from the Australian duo of Helen Franzmann and Mick Turner — and now that the record's out, we can all share in its dream-like quality! The band's touring in Europe this May with Bonnie "Prince" Billy, and have a new music video for "Crow's Ash Tree" to share ahead of their departure.

"Crow's Ash Tree" opens with a chugging guitar riff from Mick against some deliciously distorted keys. The rhythm powers into Helen's... (read more)
