HEAVEN IS A PLACE ON EARTHLY PLEASURES

posted July 31st, 2024

Active since the 1970s, Jill Fraser is a composer and electronic music pioneer with a staggering list of credits across music, film, television and performance. Yet her new album, Earthly Pleasures (out September 27) sits uniquely against her groundbreaking body of work. Her Drag City debut is a modular resetting of American revival-style hymns that speculates on death, what comes after it, and how the spirit of our songs might be interpreted after we’re gone — taking Jill’s ever-evolving curiosity about music as... SPIN A BOP OFF DEAN SPUNT'S BASIC EDITIONS

posted July 29th, 2024

Dean Spunt’s all-new Basic Editions, out September 27, is an excursion in electronic sound that instrumentally unpacks his fascination with language — in this case, the syntax of systems and processes of various 64-voice E-MU modules. Against the traditional sonic manipulations of No Age and other Spunt projects, Basic Editions is a meditative, compulsive, and consumptive record in Dean’s non-aesthetic aesthetic that delivers further unexpected hard-turns in his two-decade career. Hear the first single today: “Gonzo Bop”.

Track one on Basic... (read more)

WHITNEY JOHNSON OR MATCHESS? DUAL IDENTITIES EMERGE ON HAV AND STENA

posted July 23rd, 2024

“I am living a double life.” This is how Whitney Johnson, a.k.a. Matchess, once described the co-existence of her alter egos: the musical entity Matchess, and the sociologist of sound known in academia as Whitney Johnson. With the dual existence of Hav and Stena, both out September 27, these two identities now stretch and twist across each other to create hypnotic, engaging new parallels: two distinct albums from two different artists. In demonstration, two new singles/videos materialize today: “... (read more)

THE FOLKLORE OF DOROTHY CARTER

posted July 18th, 2024

Drag City’s approaching first-ever reissue of Dorothy Carter’s Troubadour (arriving August 30) is a merry moment to celebrate. Her 1976 debut found Dorothy hammering out a folk sound inclusive of the music she found out in the world: Appalachian folk tunes, ancient psalms and hymns, melodies from Scotland, Ireland, France, and a few of her own songs, too! Today, take your turn towards “Masquerade”, one of Dorothy’s original compositions.

Dorothy’s dulcimer shimmers reflectively on the instrumental “Masquerade”, joined... (read more)

TY’S HEART BEATS MAKE LOVE RUDIMENTS

posted July 9th, 2024

Never one to shy away from a challenge, Ty Segall is back with Love Rudiments, an instrumental album of percussive music in the throes of passion, out August 30 via Drag City. Following his sprawling double album Three Bells earlier this year, Love Rudiments is an album-length journey over the emotional rainbow of a love affair — a trip through Ty’s psyche that plunges him into uncharted musical (and sentimental) depths.
