It happened, as all good things, through fate and circumstance. A late night party conversation, between perfumer Sanae Barber and Drag City label head Dan Koretzky, lead to talk of musician Will Oldham, a.k.a. Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, and the songwriter’s long-held desire to create a signature scent.
From there, destiny took shape. A bottle of Middle Eastern cologne arrived in the mail, along with a cryptic note — and Barber was off on a strange journey, searching for an elusive perfume which would illuminate both Oldham’s aesthetic and her own.
Perfumery, like songs, encapsulate notes, capture an expression of moods, of stories, and memories...and can send out intentions...each bottle, like each song, is its own composition of top notes, deep bass notes, and the middle notes — all which aim to speak the language of the heart.
Both Barber and Oldham were on the hunt for something special, a combination of oils that would produce a bouquet totally new and unique.
They began with the ancient scents of the Middle East, particularly, the rare oil known as “oud.” Referencing both the distilled resin of the agar wood tree, as well as a beautiful Middle Eastern instrument, “Oud” seemed the perfect place to start the first steps of the dance. Harvested from an organically grown forest of 30-year-old agar trees, this deeply mystical oil formed the center of what would become Bonnie Billy.
A unisex blend of deep Assam oud, Egyptian jasmine, French mimosa, and the rare, exotic oils of Mukhallat and kewda — Bonnie Billy is an exclusive, limited-edition, handcrafted scent. A dab of this multi‐layered and mysterious aromatic mix will bring to mind ancient bazaars, mystic shrines, and the sensual sway of veiled dancers.
Intoxicating, mysterious — the result of Barber and Oldham’s incredible creative give and take is an utterly one‐of‐a‐kind, a signature combination of oils which draws its power from an array of ingredients that are difficult to source, extremely rare, truly potent (80% perfume content) and unfortunately finite in supply.
