DOES JOHN MULANEY PACK A SACK LUNCH TO HOST SNL?

posted February 28th, 2020

Hey kids! John Mulaney is set to host Saturday Night Live this weekend! It's his third time doing so, which probably puts him in some select company, but perhaps equally as interesting is the fact that SNLs musical guest this weekend is David Byrne, who, as you recall, makes an appearance on John's new album, John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch! Say, what an excellent time to remind you that while John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch is currently streaming on... (read more)

FOR ONCE, BOTH SIDES ARE BILL NACE

posted February 27th, 2020

With a requisite crackle, hum and drone, you're fixed to slide into the dis-rupture in stereo that is guitarist Bill Nace and - well, THIS is a nice surprise - Bill's got his own record out this time! Sweet - in the past 15 years or so, Bill's been a trusty improv partner to so many: Steve Baczkowski, Chris Corsano, Paul Flaherty, Greg Kelly, James Twig Harper, Samara Lubelski and Thurston Moore, plus Body/Head, to name but a... SEND IN THE GOONS

posted February 24th, 2020

The notorious No A.G.E is back! A guitar/drums duo (Randall and drummer/vocalist Dean Spunt) with a penchant for self-recorded samples, No Age are mostly unconcerned with things like space or pause, and Goons Be Gone is gorgeously thick-- a hazy, delirious expanse that's both comforting and disorienting.

Listening to Goons Be Gone, it's hard to comprehend how just two people can manage to make so much noise while still sounding so subdued and mysterious-- it's easier to imagine Randall... (read more)

YEAR OF THE RAT

posted February 18th, 2020

The Sir Richard Bishop show is back in town, alive as ever with exotic action, plus a bit of everything but the kitchen sink! Oneiric Formulary is the sound of surprise - first Sir Rick being surprised, then us! Not simply by six-string acoustic rags 'n ragas, but departures as well into electric guitar, keyboard tricks, avant atmosphere, and even a reedy eastern knees-up! It's got mad variety, the kind you don't see much of anymore - an Ed Sullivan kind of evening out, with... (read more)

NO TREND PRESENT THE NEWEST, PRE-DESIGNATED, YOUTH-ORIENTED TOP FORTY HITS FOR YOUR REQUIRED LISTENING PLEASURE

posted February 17th, 2020

Washington, DC (home of the worst corruption ever known), wasn't always like this. In the early 1980s, it was home to the world's most vital, distinguished hardcore punk communities. With Minor Threat, Dischord Records and an ascetic straight-edge lifestyle that disdained booze, sex, and drugs, the city made a name for its loud, fast music and righteous progressive politics - a latter-day Camelot.

Hailing from the unhip suburb of Ashton, Maryland, No Trend presented a sneering alternative to that sanctimonious ethos. Cynical, surreal,... (read more)

SHEPHERD ON A SOUTHERN QUEST

posted February 14th, 2020

Bill Callahan loves the south - especially because there's so damn much of it! He lives in it in the US, but once he passes Southernmost Point Buoy, there's still so many amazing people and countries and continents even further south. The deepest dive of all would be Antarctica, but they lack the necessary clubs/recording studios/radio to attract such a musical man for very long. So Australia it is!

The latest whistle-stop on the Shepherd In a Sheepskin Vest tour that's (slow)rocked the nations... (read more)

HEAD OUT ON THE HIGHWAY

posted February 13th, 2020

Ben Chasny, now two decades into the journey that is Six Organs of Admittance, transmits a new single from the forthcoming Companion Rises. "The 101" acts as 6OOA's rocking travelogue (Hartford→Detroit→SF, then the 101 north) across the good old USA. Ben's brisk picked guitar
invention sets the pace, as synth, electric guitar and digital percussion join to drive the travel displacement vibe and anticipation of home again to a feverish pitch.

Elisa Ambrogio's video for "The 101" rides a... (read more)
