SIX ORGANS OVER ITALY

posted April 29th, 2013

Lately, the Drag City underground HMFQ has received strange sonics from the outer regions of the solar system. Since our satellite (overground antenna) is live, 24/7, ready for direct interface with intelligent, (ie, non-earthly) life at any moment, it's not really freaking us out too much. We get audio disruptions from asteroid showers, magnetic fields, space junk, and exploding planets on a regular basis, which keeps us on each other's toes and acutely dialed in; thus, it's with the greatest of ease that we recognize... IT'S A-HAPPENING! THE SOURCE FAMILY PREMIERES WITH SPECIAL EVENTS NATIONWIDE!

posted April 26th, 2013

Spring has sprung, and The Source Family naturally grows wild in the country! The Father Yod doc, about a peaceful hippie cult of spritual rock n' communal mayhem, healthy living, meditation and otherworldly practices all originating in a star-packed health-food restaurant in 1970s Hollywood, premieres at IFC Theater in New York beginning May 1st (get your tix here)! Leading up to it we've prepared nothing but Source Family mania for the coming weekend and for weeks into the future at premieres nationwide! Things get real... (read more)

SCOUTING THE LANDSCAPES: NIBLETT TOURS EUROPE

posted April 25th, 2013

Hott Drang - 2013 just might be alright after all. There is a new Scout Niblett record, and while we like the title, It's Up To Emma, we want to gently remind that it's also up to YOU, oh nameless, faceless (but never soulless) live music-loving fans of Scout Niblett! And that means of course, ALL y'all Scout fans (and what the heck, modern music fans in general), amiright? What ever do we mean? First and foremost know that it means that we... (read more)

THE DRAG CITY NEWSLETTER APRIL 2013!!!!!

posted April 22nd, 2013

OPENING DAZE

Here comes the sun, anyone? Yes. The ice caps is melting once again - but this time, it means one simple, unsinister thing, and that is Spring. This time, we are not dying, but living anew! Spring, and pitchers and catchers alike are swinging. Spring: the promise of music is on the air, of music in the air - sounds blaring forth from windows and macs and cars and melting into the heat, and the congregation of the many (though, let's face it,... HISSING TOWARDS EUROPE!!!

posted April 22nd, 2013

Whoa, nature! Nothing like inertia to help things grow; ever since the release of Water On Mars, the intensely fuzz-soaked banger of a full length album out just a month ago, Purling Hiss have annihlistically replicated the album at crushing volumes across the USA for jovial young rockers and old heads in each town they've visited, moving bodies with their waves of affirming sound, then chilling out afterwards and signing body parts they didn't previously know existed (yet obliging like the glad partiers they... BUY YOUR WAY INTO THE SOURCE FAMILY TODAY!

posted April 18th, 2013

YaHoWha! People can't stop talking about The Source Family documentary! This most loving yet kinda insane cult too of the 1970s hippie cult scene, centered on Father Yod's electrifying teachings and larger than life persona, maintained a brief yet remarkable utopia in the early 70s on the back of their hip n' successful health food restaurant called, The Source. Things got a lot trippier than the vegan chow they served up to stars and castaways on a daily basis at the restaurant, as Father... (read more)

SOPHIA MAKING WAVES AGAIN

posted April 18th, 2013

It's been just over a year since we first jumped Into The Waves, with a life boat full of songs from Sophia Knapp. Adrift the chops, we've seen a slew of video singles from the album and a smidgeon of live shows for lucky-few audiences across the US. The next week brings another one of those hyper-lucked out times, as Sophia plays two shows in the New York area around the release of a new 7" single, book-ending Record Store Day. Seriously, who... FAUN THE ROAD AGAIN, BABY

posted April 15th, 2013

Hark, it's Faun Fables! Or rather - Honk, it's Faun Fables, back on the road after a long winter without their busking minstrelry on the highways and byways of the land. Having kids has slowed Dawn McCarthy and Nils Frkydahl down a step, and in addition to their lovely daughters, they both have other worthy musical projects (like Dawn's record with the Bonnie 'Prince', natch!) - but we feel, and we're not alone in this, a little less human without the... BANANAMANIA!

posted April 12th, 2013

OH SHIT - remember when RTX totally reinvented themselves into the P-Fuck/MPC/Zapp MONSTER UNIT we all know and love as BLACK BANANAS? I mean, when was that?! It seems so natural, so perfect a transition that we can't hardly EVEN remember the pre-rad days of the RTX-volution. And neither can head Banana JJ Rox! Rad Times Xpress IV blew minds and continues to do so - this auto-classic still sells like hotcakes (grab 'em while the current repress is still grippable) a whole... (read more)

DOIN' IT WITH DAVID GRUBBS

posted April 10th, 2013

David Grubbs has been gettin' down to business on The Plain Where the Palace Stood - and everywhere else too! His new album comes out next Tuesday—and you can preview it on Pitchfork leading up till then! Meanwhile, David has appeared in a handful of monumental performances in Europe in the past few weeks that have nothing to do with The Plain Where the Palace Stood, mining fertile other territories in the world of sound. The first of these was “The Wired Salutation,”... (read more)
