MATTHEW YOUNG'S SUMMER SONG

posted April 16th, 2025

We're drifting back to Matthew Young's world with a brand-new album: Undercurrents! Collecting eight oddly dissimilar pieces that somehow fit together perfectly, Young's latest work was recorded intermittently since the late 1970s, songs both old and new. Settle in with the second single out today, "The Summer Girls".

Undercurrents displays a wide range of Young’s various sonic pallets: similar to Recurring Dreams (1981, reissued 2014) the electronic landscapes meander coherently, and much like Traveler's Advisory (1986, reissued 2010), the album skews from the nearly algorithmic computer music of side one to the moving pastoral folk of the second. “The Summer Girls” is a setting of a poem by Matthew's aunt, Marion Lineaweaver on the record's latter half, showcasing Young’s love for the hammered dulcimer. His beautiful chiming patterns lay the groundwork for a touching, yearning vocal performance, with Young’s fragile, honest voice stirring deep, powerful nostalgia while reflecting on summers past. The music video stirs in Matthew's dulcimer hits with images of shorelines and Marion's poems.

Matthew Young's intimate folk musings and home electronica cross many genres travelling from his dwelling to yours. Undercurrents is out May 30, 2025!
