The Nathan Bowles Trio’s upcoming Drag City debut, Are Possible (out July 26), became plausible when Nathan, Casey Toll and Rex McMurry met up on Nathan’s 2018 watershed record, Plainly Mistaken. Now cemented as a dynamite triad and fully locked in, the three set the table for Are Possible with a tender new single and music video today: “Our Air”.

Opening with the rich tones of Casey’s upright bass, the Trio break into a jazz stratosphere on “Our Air”. Nathan’s plaintive banjo pickin’ and Rex’s snare breakbeats shift the track’s newgrass ruminations into a deep meditative field. Setting a deliberate pace, Skylar Gudasz’s moodily-blown flute sneaks in to light up a soulful aroma. Evan Morgan’s music video aerates the song on earthy film, with bustling leaves and cool creeks fading through each shot.

Are Possible captures Nathan on the banjo, keys, percussion, and a custom mellowtone, with Rex seated on the kit and Casey handling double bass and guitar; after all, music is time in redux, and Are Possible’s many moments in time carry details from all over the place. Mixed by Cooper Crain at Chicago’s Electrical Audio, the Nathan Bowles Trio let loose Are Possible on July 26, 2024! Catch them in the act this summer, opening for Grails in June and performing a smattering of dates in July.
