The early Espers music back in print and circulating freely around the world! It's been a dream for so long for so many - and we're almost there, folks! But before we get to the March reissue date, let's pause, review and listen to a tune.
Emerging in Philadelphia around 2004, the trio of Meg Baird, Greg Weeks and Brooke Sietinsons added a few guest performers for their debut album, crafting delicate-yet-full-toned arrangements strewn with classical and traditional music touches, acid leads and a folkish air suffused with ennui (really, is there any other kind?) - all in stark contrast to their peers, whose ennui had to do with typical youth problems and the tech-based world that was coming. Espers' classicist idealism was rooted in an ongoing flow of ideas that commenced long before their time and continues to this day, and fittingly, their music retains a mystic time-shifting nature nearly two decades later.
"Riding", written with organic alchemy by candlelight in a creaky old Philadelphia loft, radiates a potent afterglow. The band's collective worship of Lee Underwood shines through, while establishing their own stimulating sonic brew, featuring lead vocals by Greg and backing vocals by Meg over a bed of acoustics and a stinging acid lead guitar.
Both Espers and The Weed Tree arrive on March 13th! Until then, enjoy the "Riding" while you can.
