Hamerkop's brand-new LP debut Remote is a natural progression from the criminally-underrated Bachelorette catalog, seeking catharsis through the contextualizing of personal texts into lush songscapes, using the chill of synth-pop to mask the fallible human soul hidden behind it. Far away from her native New Zealand with a new life and family in America, Annabel Alpers strove to find elements of her old identity in new environs, building songs out of sonic scraps from remote places, as if she were sewing a blanket in which to wrap herself.
Atop a roiling sequence of samples that project the forlorn feeling of being far from home, Hamerkop unravels a koan-like vocal round with a set of melodies that go straight to the heart. "Remote" emotes forbearance in the face of absence and recollection as it boomerangs relentlessly back on the most patient of lovers, a combination of folk, psych and pop influences with a modernistic sound. Hamerkop welcomes the transection of classic pop sounds with innovations in sonics, creating music that stands the test of time.
Welcome Hamerkop with open arms at their only US show (for now!) in Baltimore before a quick (but much-needed!) jaunt to New Zealand. Remote drops on February 7th.
