How to Get Your Record Played In Shops is a new direction in music from Mike Donovan, a busman's holiday from his guitar-based subterranean pop via a serpentine, keyboard-laden path. It makes for fulfilling solo-artist listening; the shards and trickles from his broken music-box are slivers of solitude, echoes of weird scenes and falsetto-hued odes all designed to crack your spirit and seep it into the atmosphere around your ears, while merging with your subconsciousness below. How To Get Your Record Played In Shops (out 4/20 - preorder now!) showcases Donovan's penchant for bright night melodies and his finesse in crafting luminous moods with stark progressions, here balanced atop the creaking of piano and strings.

"Cold Shine" is a beauty in the mold - transposed to guitar with mellotron and synth lines that interact with with the potent images from California's recent Thomas wildfires. Sandwiching drive-by footage of the carnage unfolding with the haunting quiet of aftermath images, artist/filmmaker Betty Nguyen connects us to the awful randomness of a horrific natural disaster - one in this case that claimed more than seven hundred homes in Southern California - placing blazes, scorched earth and blooming desert flowers in such proximity produces a vexatious effect. Mike's haunting vocals floats among the rubble like an invocation for calmness and healing.
