NEW! AT SOCCER CLUB CLUB: THE TRADITIONAL OBJECT

posted October 4th, 2013

Drag City’s Soccer Club Club is pleased to announce The Traditional Object, the second installment of Chicago visual artist Lisa Alvarado. A special performance by Natural Information Society and catering by Land & Sea Dept. will be kicking off the opening reception today, October 4, and Bitchin Bajas and Natural Information Society will close it out with a live collaboration on November 3rd. Both events are free and open to the public.

Reworking fabric, embroidery and paint, Lisa Alvarado’s collection of fringed double-sided painted banners will occupy the space. The work combines material-driven, forensic abstraction with the formal idioms of ceremonial crafts belonging to traditions that exist within the aftermath of cultural erasure. The Traditional Object draws on Alvarado’s study of historically disregarded traditions and perspectives such as the Aymara linguistic tradition, the Quito school, Taoist occult talismans and indigenous banner-making traditions. The work refuses to own a conventional relationship to tradition; rather it desires to stand for a forgotten, destroyed or the yet to be known tradition.
