It's merely one example of Chasny's vision, one that can be traced to his mind-forward realization of an epic, science-fantastic trip involving humans in space and the combination of fallibility and cold fate that our lives mean in the crushing all-jaws of the Universe. As the idea propelled, time-travel seemed to be the only way to realize it- for who better to help Ben launch the space-craft than his old Comets on Fire-mates, especially since they all shared a bit of history that both happened and didn't happen?
